Course Description

This 16-hour course prepares students to operate safely and effectively at motor vehicle collisions requiring extrication. Students will perform incident size-up and hazard assessment, establish a safe working area, stabilize vehicles, create access and egress points, and assist with patient disentanglement and removal. Hands-on evolutions will reinforce the safe use of hand, hydraulic, pneumatic, and powered rescue tools. Students will also address common vehicle hazards, including undeployed airbags, fuel leaks, electrical systems, alternative-fuel vehicles, and changing vehicle construction. Emphasis will be placed on coordinated operations, patient protection, and effective teamwork throughout the extrication process.
